Dentist Chair Meditation

StyleCaster

It was a week ago and I had a 9:20am dentist appointment. I was rushing like a maniac, but I made it on time. I go to the dentist every 3 months because I have super sensitive gums, so I need some extra TLC when it comes to my teeth, and I really don’t mind going to the dentist. However, given the fact I have such sensitivity, sometimes it really f-ing hurts when they’re poking and prodding in my mouth.

Last week there were a few minutes where I was like ok this shit hurts. For the first time in this situation, though, I just kind of relaxed and kind of meditated….yes, while in the dentist chair. I know a dentist chair probably seems like the last place one would actually meditate, but it showed me that you can really meditate and zone out just about anywhere if you allow yourself to.

I simply shut my eyes, stopped thinking about what I was feeling in my mouth, and turned my mind off. Any time some thought would enter my head or I’d feel the pain, I’d push it out of my head. Of course, it’s hard to breathe in and breathe out as one might do during meditation, while your mouth is being held open, BUT I was able to focus on the other parts of meditation, and it helped. Before I knew it, it was time for the brushing part of the appointment (love that part!), and all was good.

So, next time you find yourself in a less than ideal situation that might not be one you can immediately get out of, take a minute to quiet your mind and do your own little version of meditation. You might find it just might be exactly what the doctor dentist ordered.

I’ve been an almost daily meditator for over three years now. Now, when some people picture a meditation session, they might be thinking of yoga mats, candles, and soft music, with the lights low. Well, I only do yoga once a week, though it does nicely restore my 53-year-old body after a long weekend of household chores. The only candles in my house belong to my wife and daughter. I’ve got some soft music, but it’s mostly Air Supply and Bread. And I usually meditate with the lights full on. I got a site regarding meditation as Kirpal Singh . It is helpful to meditate.
